In her spare time, you will find Dr. Zina exploring all the beauty the west coast has to offer with her husband and three young children. She is an avid traveller, yogi, novice skier, and self-proclaimed coffee-addict.
Meet Dr. Zina Alkafaji
As a mother and a healthcare provider, Dr. Zina understands that children require extra care, time, and attention during a dental visit, as well as a comfortable, child-centered setting. At Lolo Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Zina has created the perfect environment for meeting these needs. As a parent of young children, she knows how difficult it can be to instill good eating and brushing habits in the home, and has lots of ideas for parents on how to ensure healthy smiles for their own families. She is a strong believer in prevention rather than intervention, and chooses to take a conservative approach whenever possible.
After graduating from the College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois- Chicago, she practiced general dentistry for two years before pursuing her true passion- dentistry for children. Dr. Zina realized that the magic of children kept her enchanted and challenged everyday at work. She wanted to become an expert in children and their little teeth so she spent 3 extra years studying at the University of British Columbia in order to become a certified specialist in pediatric dentistry. During this time she also received a Masters in Craniofacial Science by completing research in pediatric sedation.
She likes volleyball, running, skiing and yoga. She can name all of the My Little Pony characters and several Pokemon. She is also learning to speak French (beginner) and loves to practice!
Meet Dr. Shannon Munsie
Dr. Shannon Munsie comes to us after having worked for 3 years in Ottawa, ON as a staff pediatric dentist at CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario) and private practice. She is from Vancouver, BC and is happy to be back to contribute to the community where she grew up. She loves to see children learn to master the dental experience.
Dr. Shannon spent 8 summers as a camp counselor and volleyball coach at sleep-away camp and went through her dental training at the University of Western Ontario interested in pediatrics and wanting to learn best how to care for children and communicate with families. She fell in love with pediatric dentistry during her hospital dental residency at SickKids Hospital in Toronto and went on to complete her specialty certificate and masters degree in pediatric dentistry at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital.
She is experienced working with children who are medically complex, with cleft lip and palate and autism spectrum disorder. She has also lectured on these topics to help other dentists be able to improve their practice in providing quality care and education to their pediatric patients and families.
